Sum Dim Sum is the latest dim sum frenzy restaurant that has just opened along Jln Besar, joining the rest of the popular dim sum joints like Swee Choon and Dim Sum Place. Sum Dim Sum is a few shops away from the popular Butter Studio and could be considered opposite of Jln Besar food center.
There are 2 levels to the restaurant, with the upper deck catered to larger groups and the ground floor to smaller individuals. Items to be ordered are to be written on a pc of paper for processing. We ordered 6 items in all, of which 5 are their popular items.
1. Hot and spicy dumpling ($4.80) - my favourite 抄手. However was a little disappointed with the dish as it was pure sourish and not spicy. Lacking the chilli oil in the dish. Rating: 3.2/5
2. Signature crispy pork bun ($6) - was very much looking forward to this dish as was hoping to meet Tim Ho Wan's standard but sadly.. the bun was not crispy and the filling was a little cold. The bun has a nice tinge of pandan flavor but still lacking the om factor. Rating: 3.5/5
3. Wolfberry with mushroom dumpling ($4.50) - its basically siew mai. Nothing special. Rating: 3.2/5
4. Chicken feet with abalone sauce ($5) - a little different from other restaurants where it's usually braised with thicker sauce. This is in abalone sauce. The feet was rather tender and springy. Rating: 3.6/5
5. Boiled vegetables ($5.20) - boiled lettuce drizzled with sauce. The vegetables are not well boiled and are in clumps. Tasted rather plain as well. Rating: 3/5
6. Deep fried yam dumpling ($4.50) - the dumpling was cold and the oil taste was too strong for our liking. Rating: 2.8/5
We both would have preferred the usual dim sum joints like Swee Choon or Dim Sum Place as their dim sum are much more satisfying. Hopefully Sum Dim Sum could have more improvements in their dishes both in terms of taste and quality.
