| Posted: 15 Mar 2019 01:58 PM PDT Duke University's Zion Williamson is finally back on the court following a month-long injury spurred by a burst Nike shoe. Williamson and coach Mike Krzyzewski shared some insights into the making of Williamson's new shoes during a post-game press conference Thursday. Williamson was famously knocked to the ground with a knee sprain after his Nike shoe blew out less than a minute into the game against arch-rival North Carolina Feb. 20. Nike said in a statement that it was "concerned" and was "working to identify the issue." The freshman sensation made his return wearing a modified version of Kyrie Irving's 4 model Nikes, rather than the Paul George's 2.5 model that failed him the last time. He was, of course, asked many times about the shoes by reporters after the game. "The shoes were incredible in this game," Williamson told reporters after Duke beat Syracuse 84-72 in the ACC tournament. Williamson scored a whopping 29 points to lead the team to victory.  The custom white and blue Nikes he wore for his return feature Duke's logo on the back. They were designed to be stronger and more supportive for the 6'7", 284-pound star. Reporters asked Williamson if they'd gotten any special modifications. "I couldn't really specifically tell you if I wanted to," Williamson said. "I just know they're a little stronger than the regular Kyrie 4's, so I want to thank Nike for making these, but, yeah, they felt very comfortable." Krzyzewski explained some of the efforts Nike put into making the new shoes. "Right after the event, they sent their top people out here to figure out what went wrong, the next day," he said. "And then those people went to China to actually look at the making of a shoe that would be very supportive. And then they came back within a week with different alternatives to make sure that it was done right." He also explained that Williamson had worn his other pair of shoes too many times, and he has now been advised to change them more frequently.  Williamson said he made the decision to return just a few days before the game against Syracuse. "There was never any pressure for me to rush back when I wasn't ready," he said. Duke is four years into a 12-year deal with Nike as the exclusive supplier of uniforms, shoes and apparel. Soon after Williamson's basketball shoe ripped apart, Nike's stock price took a billion-dollar hit, though its value has since recovered. "We have a long-standing relationship with Nike and their team consistently works with Duke Basketball to ensure our players are wearing the proper products," Deputy Director of Athletics Jon Jackson told CBS News. "We have a very close relationship with them," Krzyzewski said. "We think it's the best shoe, or else we wouldn't be with them."  |

| Wine, Women, Shoes event raises more than $100,000 for Opportunity House - Reading Eagle Posted: 15 Mar 2019 08:26 PM PDT Civic, business and government leaders dance and strut their stuff for Opportunity House. Reading, PA — More than 400 people gathered Thursday night in the DoubleTree by Hilton for "Wine, Women & Shoes," the fourth annual fundraiser for Opportunity House. Kate Alley, chief development officer and organizer of the event, said she had to cap ticket sales at 400 because the rollicking event has grown so popular. Between ticket sales and solicitations by so-called "Shoe Guys," the event raised more than $100,000. Shoe guys are men who volunteer to serve as escorts, servers and chaperones during the event. The 32 Shoe Guys included Mike Ehlerman, chairman of the Berks County Convention Center Authority; Dr. Khalid Mumin, superintendent of the Reading School District; and Elsayed "Steve" Elmarzouky, owner of the Queen City Family Restaurant and president of the Islamic Center of Reading. Dr. Brian Reedy of Berks Plastic Surgery in Wyomissing was crowned the King of Sole and presided over the fashion show. Top Shoe Guys performed their own specialized dance for the occasion, carried trays with refreshments and escorted models down the runway during a fashion show. Fashion show models were local businesswomen who expanded their comfort zones by displaying the latest fashions while being escorted by their favorite Shoe Guys, Alley said. "These Shoe Guys are accountants, lawyers and construction workers, so dancing in front of a big crowd doesn't come naturally to them but they really surprised the women in the audience," Alley said. Food from nine restaurants, bottles from seven local wineries and fashions from a variety of designers were available and among the many things auctioned was a dinner for eight at a specially reserved cottage. Alley said all proceeds benefit Opportunity House, which feeds, houses and employs dozens every year. Alley said Opportunity House has been helping the homeless population in the area since November 1984 and has expanded since then. In addition to offering an emergency shelter that served nearly 450 people last year, Opportunity House offers a 24/7 child care and learning center, services from the Children's Alliance Center, assistance for veterans, and reuse and recycle services that reinvest funds back into the agency in order to further support the mission and services. With bars opening up for "Eggs and Kegs" starting at 9 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, you'll have a whole lot of time to make some bad spending decisions, according to a study from the website finder.com. They found Americans have spent an estimated $39.4 billion on spontaneous drunk purchases last year. That's more than 2017's $30.43 billion. "Looks like a hefty bill could be at the end of the rainbow this St. Patrick's Day, considering 26 percent of those who drink admitted to making a purchase under the influence," said finder's Consumer Advocate Rachel Dix-Kessler in a statement. Men do more drunk shopping than women, and millennial men spend more than anyone.Getty According to their research, an estimated 53.4 million (26%) of American adults admit to making a purchase under the influence. On average, Americans spent $736 per person on drunk purchases. That's no small thing, Dix-Kessler says. "Nothing says buzzkill like a dent in your bank account after a night of drinking." Interestingly, men are more likely than women to drunk shop, spending an average $870 on drunk purchases, compared to women who spent only $511. What are the guys buying? No surprise that there's a lot of food and cigarettes, but 38 percent also admitted to buying shoes and clothing. The top purchase for women under the influence is food, with 58 percent saying they'd bought a meal after a drink. Closely following is the 52 percent of women who say they'd bought shoes or clothing and 27 percent who said they drunkenly spent on gambling. When it comes to the generations, millennials spent the most drunk, dishing out a whopping $1,047. That's more than double the spending of baby boomers ($466) and Gen X ($469). Weirdly, this despite the fact that millennials consumed the least alcohol over the past year. Of the generations, Gen Xers (60 percent) are more likely to consume alcohol regularly than boomers (57 percent) and millennials (54 percent). Not surprisingly, finder.com, a web site that purports to help people with everyday life decisions, such as finding a credit card, buying a home and getting health insurance, has a solution. "If you find you're add-to-the-cart happy while under the influence, remove all payment methods on your apps and online accounts," advises Dix-Kessler, adding that "shopping stoppers" like finder.com's Icebox can be used to replace buy-now buttons on major retailer's sites. "If you're going out, leave your credit cards to a night in," she says, adding "Most important, if this is an ongoing problem, consider evaluating your relationship with alcohol.
