End of an era! Now the Big Brother amphitheatre used for eviction shows is being demolished – after the Dreamworld mansion was destroyed by vandals

Dreamworld is officially demolishing the show's amphitheatre, which was once home to Big Brother's famous, often-raucous, sometimes-controversial evictions.

Over the years, it also set the scene for Sarah-Marie Fedele's bum dance, Bree Amer's eviction blunder, and some truly terrifying spectacles from the show's studio audience.

Then there was the moment host Gretel Killeen – who steered the show for seven seasons, from its debut in 2001 through to 2007 – would rather forget.

Oh, brother: The Dreamworld amphitheatre was originally built in the mid-1980s.

In 2004, evictee Merlin Luck had viewers at home speechless when he decided to remain, erm, speechless and stage a silent 'Free the Refugees' protest, his own personal social statement around immigration.

It made headlines around the country, and was a water cooler moment in workplaces the following day.

The arena hosted the show's evictions on Channel 10 (between 2001 – 2008), and once again on Channel Nine (between 2012 – 2014).

This is not the first time Big Brother's legend has been tarnished.

In May, pictures showed how the once-glamorous Big Brother set had fallen into dilapidated squalor.

The swimming pool resembled a swamp, covered in green algae; the grounds were out of control; windows and doors were smashed, and vandals had spritzed the place in unsightly graffiti.

Even the once-comfy diary room – where housemates bitched, moaned, confessed and received Big Brother tasks – looked like a Breaking Bad crack den.

In June the mansion was sensationally – and deliberately – set on fire.

Four children, aged between 11 and 15, were charged with arson.

The City of Gold Coast Council approved the demolition last week.
